William Eller Esq on his Retirement from the Post of Musical Director of the Manchester Midday Concerts Society

Illuminated manuscript on vellum presented as a retirement gift to William Eller Esq in recognition of unstinting work as Musical Director of the Manchester Midday Concerts Society - an association that survives to this day. Beautifully written in a calligraphic hand with gold leaf illuminated initials; vibrantly and colourfully illustrated featuring classical female and male figures playing a cello and harp and small angelic figures - cherubs or putti - playing bells and trumpets; decorated to edges with floral motifs.

The text expresses profound gratitude for its recipient’s dedication in ‘bringing good music to the business community of Manchester’ and is signed by committee members including Sydney H Nicholson the renowned organist of Westminster Abbey and founder of the RSCM as well as Gustav Behrens, Cecil Bateson, Stanley Withers and John Seller. The artist William Ongley Miller (1883-1960) studied in Brighton and the Royal College of Art. His portrait of his daughter is held by Manchester Art Gallery.

PHYSICAL CONDITION: Measures 40cm x 59cm. Very good in spite of insect trails to rear. Small 2mm holes visible when held to light, Colours and text remain vibrant.
