Rare privately printed ‘in memoriam’ volume for the Dumfries poet and politician David Dunbar who gave his home town its nickname, ‘Queen of the South.’ Laid into this volume is a large albumen photograph of Dunbar, an annotated Scottish family photograph take at College House, Dollis Avenue, Finchley (1911) and a photograph of the grave of Jane Crosbie.

DESCRIPTION: Small quarto bound in grubby blue cloth over boards, worn to edges and spine ends. ‘Castle Douglas’ bookseller’s ticket to the orange coated endpapers. Inscribed on the following yellow coated endpaper: ‘Mr Crosbie In affectionate remembrance of David Dunbar. Dumfries Dec.r 10th 1873’ with an illegible pencilled inscription above. Albumen photographs tipped in opposite the title page, both grubby. The book which runs to 64 pages comprises a hymn, a narrative of Dunbar’s life which offers many examples of his verse, a tribute by Dr W A F Browne (Psychological Consultant, Crichton Institute), letters of condolence and an epitaph. The text is spotted and frequently dirty - this book came out of the backroom of an English bookseller where it had lain for a long time.
