A volume simply teeming with the pencilled annotations and inserts of a Professor of English literature. The soft backed volume in very good condition contains c25 laid in, jotted on page markers and perhaps c1000+ handwritten pencilled notes and annotations throughout the endpapers, text and margins. Much more than just a casual reader’s notes, the previous owner’s annotations carry scholarly weight offering unique perspectives not found in standard reference texts while navigating the volume’s multiple themes and meanings. Many of the page markers and notes highlight key words such as ‘plunge’, ‘solemn’ and ‘exquisite’ or highlight ideas and concepts such as ‘mutual reciprocal mirroring’ p255, ‘love = sex’ p192, ‘a diver plunging into the sea’ p44, ‘something central which permeated’ p281 and ‘feminism’ p198. The handwriting is neat and easily decipherable, a little scribbled in places. Laid in is a 2pp lightly annotated 2025 paper cutting including articles titled ‘Virginia Woolf’s muse’ and ‘Mrs Dalloway at 100’.

From the collection of a retired academic of English Literature at the University of Leeds.
