ELIZA LYNN LINTON AND EDWARD CLODD’S COPY : Studies in Song

First edition of this 1880 collection of poetry by Algernon Charles Swinburne. Dedicated to Mrs Lynn Linton (1822 - 1898) who was the first female salaried journalist in Britain, and also her copy of the book. Linton was the author of over 20 novels, and who despite her ground breaking role as an independent woman penned many essays with a strong anti-feminist slant. The book is inscribed by Eliza Linton and subsequently by Edward Clodd.

DESCRIPTION: Cloth boards with narrow gilt fillet to edges in very good condition. A clean, square and sound copy. Handwriting to top of title page reads ‘E Lynn Linton 1881’ and in a different pen below reads ‘to whom this book is dedicated and who bequeathed it with many others to Edw. Clodd.’ Clodd (1840 -1930) was an English banker, writer and anthropologist who had a great variety of literary and scientific friends, mixing in the same circles as Lynn Linton and Algernon Swinburne. 212 pp. plus 32 pp. advertisements collated and complete. A small nick to the top edge of the text block runs through pp.1 -88 noted on collation, but does not affect the text.
