With notes and annotations throughout by previous owner, Roger C Poole, senior lecturer in English Literature at Nottingham University and author of an controversial biography of Virginia Woolf in 1978 titled ‘The Unknown Virginia Woolf’. Perhaps the only person ever to have read all 2,000 pages of Sartre's biography of Flaubert, Poole copied Sartre in identifying the unhealing wound in the very depths of Woolf's psyche; simultaneous site of her anguish and her genius.

First Edition in original unclipped dust jacket in excellent condition. A crisp, clean and tightly bound copy. The leaves are annotated and underlined throughout in Roger Poole’s hand and laid in are paper hand written notes relevant to specific passages. pp. 167 reads ‘the period initiated by Lytton’s “semen?” - after 1907, when conversation became extremely liberated and sex was endlessly discussed’. 207 pp. An intriguing copy.
