4 volumes - 3, 4, 5 and 8 - presented to George Hamilton in 1750 on his successful matriculation in Law from Trinity College Dublin. George was an Irish politician, barrister and judge. He sat in the Irish House of Commons as MP for Belfast, and held office as Third Serjeant-at-law and later as a Baron of the Court of Exchequer (Ireland). Today he is chiefly remembered for developing the town of Balbriggan, County Dublin. Plutarch’s Lives offers biographies of Greek and Roman leaders and compares their personal qualities and accomplishments.

Provenance from a small collection of books owned by Hamilton. In good sound condition. 4 volumes bound in speckled calf, embossed in gilt to front with still striking although age worn gilt Trinity College Dublin arms. Spine in six distinct compartments. 2 volumes missing spine label, 1 intact and 1 partially intact. Trinity College Dublin bookplate attached to front paste down of each volume dated 1750 celebrating Georgio Hamilton’s university matriculation. Published by S. Hyde, E. Dobson, and for R. Owen, Dublin. Translated from the Greek. b/w full page frontispieces in each volume and 24 additional engravings accompanying each individual story throughout.
