Leeds born Marie Hartley was a graduate of Leeds College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. As an illustrative artist she travelled round the Yorkshire dales in the 1930s gathering information and talking to dales folk about their lives and traditions. Her contribution to an understanding of the Yorkshire region has been recognised by honorary degrees from both the University of Leeds and University of York. This limited edition (41/250 for sale) of her work contains over 50 wood engravings and has been printed with the original blocks used to illustrate her 1930s published books ‘Swaledale’, ‘Wenselydale’ and ‘Wharfedale’. Additional blocks have also been used from this time.

Copy number 41, quarter bound in bookcloth with patterned boards, with a slip case in excellent condition. Crisp and clean throughout. Set in Garamond type by Startype and printed by Simon Lawrence at his Fleece Press, Wakefield on Velin Arches mould made paper. Signed and numbered ‘Marie Hartley’ to rear flyleaf. Divided into 3 sections: Swaledale, Wensleydale and Whafedale. 54 individual woodblock engravings throughout in superb condition including Kilnsey Crag, Yockenthwaite, Askrigg Old Hall, Man and Sheep, Stocks at Bainbridge, Appletreewick, School Children, Linton, Reeth Bridge and many more.
