An extremely detailed hand written book of accounts spanning the period from 1766 -1794 kept by J Adams who uses a first-person narrative alongside his annual ‘account of money which I owe or am liable to pay’ and ‘an account of sums due to me.’

Transactions and dates are listed in great detail in a neat, black cursive next to sums of money exchanged in a ruled column to fore edge. Annual accounts of incomes from the Rothbury Estate, Alnwick, Castle Adams, Morpeth, Holy Island, Ovington, Glanton and Charlton corn tithes among others are noted. Detailed lists of payments repeat annually throughout the book naming many debtors: John Robinson, John Nicholson, Richard Grieve all of Alnwick, Thomas Davis and James Pattison of Warkworth and Robert Harkin of Espley among others. The sums of money recorded indicate the extent of the activities collated within. The 1790 General Account balance signed by JA on 31 December totals £47, 078:14:6. JA notes alongside his personal income to be £2, 246:6:6.
