A book dedicated to Charles Stanley, 8th Earl of Derby, with the bookplate of his distinguished successor British Prime Minister Edward George Geoffrey Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby - and inscribed twice by a 17th century relative of them both, ‘Robert Stanley’.

Attractive 17th century binding with gilt double fillet and corner pieces, rebacked using the original red morocco label. Bookplate of Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley, 14th Earl (1799-1869) to the front pastedown opposite the bookplate of ‘K K Wood’ a 20th century collector based in the Lancashire town of Bury who bought extensively from the dispersal sale of the Gale family of antiquaries at Scruton Hall in 1953. Small hole to title page; an early reader has paginated the extensive preliminaries of the book which collates complete: A8, a4, B-E8, F4. Remnants of a wax seal on the lower pastedown.

The book’s dedicatee, Charles Stanley, had succeeded his father, James Stanley, the 7th Earl who was executed for treason in Bolton in 1651 after the Battle of Worcester where he fought on the losing royalist side. Charles Stanley inherited the family estates and lived at Lathom House in Lancashire where the spa that is the subject of this book was located. A splendid association copy.
