Third edition of this 2-volume account recording Napoleon’s opinions and reflections on his life and work while in exile, written by his personal surgeon Barry O’Meara. O'Meara was surgeon on board the Bellerophon when it received Napoleon in 1815. Bonaparte was attracted by the doctor's ability to speak Italian, and when his own surgeon declined to follow him into exile, he asked that O'Meara accompany him to St. Helena as his medical attendant. The work is an important primary source for Napoleon’s final years.

Externally in very good condition, half calf binding over marbled boards and endpapers. Attractive panelled spine. Very minor bruising to corners and spine. 8.25 x 5.25 inches. Previous owner’s bookplate with a date of 29.11.46 pasted to front endpaper of each volume. Vol 1 512 pp. Vol 2 542 pp. All pages clean with minor spotting and discoloration. Library stamp of ‘Wilson’s late Dutton’s Library, Gracechurch Street’ on two of the four plates.
