A ring bound grey Conrad’s sketchbook depicting an individual, unique and somewhat wry, historical insight into the role of women in the Women’s Royal Naval Service during WW2. The binding is in good with a little wear and slight bruising to the front cover. A slight tear on each corner where the top page attaches to the ring binder. All pages within in very good condition. A pencil drawn illustration of the WRNS logo and two lines from William Blake’s Auguries of Innocence adorn the first page. Nine pages of accomplished sketches in black ink accompanied by insightful captions provide a visual historical record of the lot of the ‘pro -wren’ (trainee) and follow her ups and downs along her journey to uniform wearing Wren. The owner has hand written on the backing card, ‘Tommy Dorsey, Boogie Woogie, Tin Roof Blues, HMV?’. A cultural reference to a popular song from the late ‘30s.
