Beautifully bound presentation copy of George Canning’s Liverpool speeches of 1818, given in the city to celebrate his return as MP in the recent General Election. Then a Cabinet Minister, Canning went on, briefly, to become Prime Minister nearly a decade later just before his untimely death in 1827. This second edition has Canning’s initials to the third flyleaf and a letter presenting the book laid in. Writing from his Kensington home, ‘Gloucester Lodge Dec. 5. 1818’ Canning sends ‘a Copy which I happen to have by me of an Edition of the Speeches at Liverpool, which Mr Nicol of Pallmall [the book’s publisher] did them the honor to publish in a form much beyond their desert. They will in this shape be less unworthy of a place in your book case.’ He signs himself ‘Geo Canning’ and adds a postscript about the ‘ordinary Liverpool edition’.

The book is attractively bound, presumably at Nicol’s behest, in full tan calf with gilt decoration, spine lettering and a Greek-key turn-in to the pastedowns, front and back. Grey coated endpapers and all edges gilt; a pin hole to the second flyleaf where the letter was previously secured with a pin. A pink silk bookmark survives and Canning has made a single manuscript emendation to the text, changing ‘drank’ to ‘drunk’ in a sentence relating to a toast to William Huskisson - Canning’s fellow Liverpool MP and generally regarded as the railway passenger fatality caused by a locomotive engine when he died in 1830. The publisher has padded out the 40 pages text with a further 15 leaves of blanks. A lovely copy.
