An extraordinary combination of two major Victorian figures: a photograph signed by the poet Coventry Patmore for the children’s writer, fabulist and creator of Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Caroll, in his own name as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. The two men has become acquainted when Dodgson took his regular summer holidays at Eastbourne and was able to visit Patmore who lived in Hastings on the south coast. Dodgson admired Patmore’s verse and in return Patmore paid him the compliment of calling him ‘a brother Poet - for none but a Poet would have written Alice in Wonderland’.

Photograph measuring 246x180mm, mounted on a board measuring 380x265mm, signed and inscribed in ink, rubbing to corners.

Dodgson certainly visited Patmore in October 1890 and Patmore in return came to see Dodgson in Eastbourne in August 1891. This photograph - inscribed on Shakespeare’s birthday - was presumably sent to Dodgson at Christchurch, Oxford where he was in April 1891. See Letters of Lewis Carroll, ed Cohen, pp779 and 856-7
