Spiffy-looking collection of Lee family history papers, a mix of original and copied documents, gathered by Richard Lee of Yarner House on the eastern edge of Dartmoor and relating to the family’s history in north Yorkshire, in Kent and finally in Devon.

Attractive folio-size volume bound by Truslove and Hanson, Sloane Street in half crushed blue morocco; blue card endpapers and a manuscript title page, about 100 pages on various paper stocks with blanks to the rear. Lee had devoted himself to gathering family papers, some original, some copies, many relating to the Lee family in Pinchinthorpe in north yorkshire before their move in 1836. Copies includ a ‘List of Parchment documents 1300-1600 ‘ annotated ‘In the possession of Mr Gervase Lee. Oct: 1920’; there are notes of Wills including translations from the Latin, an autograph letter from Thomas Briggs to ‘Mr R H Lee’ of Yarner, Bovey Tracy, 1916; official copy of the 1569 will of George Conyers of ‘Pynchynthorpe’, photographic postcards and a letter from the Master’s Lodge, Trinity College Cambridge sent by P M Ramsay to the Rev: H B Hyde, Vicar of Bovey (1918); tomb records from Neston Church, Cleveland; a 1730 letter about family inheritances from Roger Lee about his father who was disinherited because he had gone to Scotland to study ‘the Phylosophers Stone’ (!) and ‘his younger Brother James Lee who was an attorney and came to be Lord chief justice..’ in addition to a 1790 document from James Lee announcing a visitation to ‘the Scholard of the School Almshouses or Hospital of the Corporation of Jesus in Guisborough.’
