First edition of Hooke's 4th Cutlerian Lecture, text complete but lacking the plates at the end. Recent brown marbled wrappers with a paper label to the upper cover. New additional endpapers; letter press text collates complete: [2] pp54; light browning throughout text otherwise very good.

Hooke’s work on the mechanical improvements of lamps combines his early architectural training with his scientific interests. This tract focusses on mechanical lamps, built with the aim of making the most efficient use of the flame’s heat energy. As Hooke notes in the opening paragraph, it is connected to his earlier work on ‘Fire and Flame’, analysing different parts of the flame to distinguish where heat is strongest, for example.
