First edition in fair condition. Contemporary calf reinforced to spine with later brown paper. The binding remains square and sound with cracking over upper hinges; front free and frontispiece loose within text block. Previous ownership inscription in a contemporary hand to recto of front free endpaper is dated 1809. The text block is age toned and browned throughout particularly to the lower half of the leaves with staining, the text remaining legible. Preliminaries and Preface collated and complete. First section numbered pp1-456 collated and complete with occasional mis-numbering and extra leaves bound in; 3 extra between pp336 -pp370; clean tear across p310 noted on collation. Contains 5 original illustrations and charts which suffer clean tears and fraying in parts; fold out illustration with clean tear throughout most part of image to left side p170, loss to lower half of p262, tear line to fold and puckering to edge p258. Section 2 numbered p1 - pp160 collated and complete; heavily browned to lower half throughout final leaves with occasional words more difficult to decipher.

Overall a good copy in spite of flaws originally compiled and rushed to print shortly after the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805.
