Camp Fire Songs - ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT

One of a kind, hard backed volume containing a 64 page collection of wonderfully illustrated campfire songs, hymns and blessings. The songs, penmanship and accompanying illustrations point heavily to the scouting or girl guiding aesthetics and traditions of the mid 20th century. Rounds meant for group singing include contemporary classics like Kookaburra, Rise up O Flame, John the Boatman, Old Clothes and Row Your Boat. The abundant ink and water colour illustrations are very accomplished, a visual treat. Large decorative calligraphic initials and red ink decorative fonts further enliven the elegant, flowing cursive of our unknown author.

PHYSICAL CONDITION: In very good condition. Hard backed volume in contemporary home made wrappers titled ‘Camp Fire Songs’ and illustrated with a pot over a burning campfire. No clues to authorship. 64 pp. songs and illustrations to versos only. Later leaves contain spaces left for unfinished illustrations; pencil written headings also await more decorative fonts. Illustrations in water colour over ink remain bright and vibrant throughout. Blank leaves to rear. Measures 22.5 cm x 17 cm. A very lovely and valuable cultural artefact offering a window into mid century community and ideals.
